Click here to download full brochure Dr. Arietta Slade will begin by focusing upon the place of fear in psychoanalytic theory and practice. Despite the fact that fear is believed central to the development and regulation of the attachment system, is of primary interest in contemporary neuroscience, and is a root cause of suffering in many traumatized patients, its role in the organization of psychic experience and in the development of relationships has been poorly understood. Dr. Slade aims to locate a consideration of fear more centrally in psychoanalytic dialogue. Secondly, Dr. Slade will present a mentalization-based intervention for high-risk mothers, infants and their families: Minding the Baby. This is an intensive, interdisciplinary program aimed at helping parents whose lives have been disrupted by trauma, abandonment, loss, and severe mental illness, develop the capacity to envision their own and their child’s internal experience. Results from a longitudinal outcome study will be used to demonstrate the application of contemporary psychoanalytic and attachment theories in a community setting. Finally, a case will be presented and Dr. Slade will discuss the case material to elucidate the concepts she has presented. |

Addictions and Relatedness: A Neuropsychoanalytic Approach to Treating the Addicted Patient
As neuroscience advances in the 21st century, it is catching up with some of the concepts of psychoanalysis, allowing us to enrich our understanding of addictions and expand our clinical approaches to the treatment and psychotherapy of addicted patients. Because we can now articulate the ways in which motivations for relatedness are supplanted by the compulsive motivations to obtain chemical substances with established neural effects, the treatment of addicted patients has become more specific and refined. Dr. Johnson will review the neuroscience and psychodynamics of addictions and depression and discuss how antidepressant medications influence the relatedness motivational system, including sexuality and cognition, and address the ways in which motivations for relatedness are instantiated in neurotransmitters, hormones and brain structures. Differentiating the impacts of cocaine and heroin addiction on the motivational system, Dr. Johnson will also present clinical material from the treatment of an addicted patient, reflecting the use of supportive, informative, psychoeducational, cognitive, motivational, advisory and interpretations of unconscious thinking and behavior to illustrate the broadness and robustness of his treatment approach to these "difficult" patients. Special Symposium with Dr. Anni Bergman, Presented by Dr. Kerstin Kupfermann NOTE: ONLY THIRTY SPOTS AVAILABLE AND PAYMENT IS REQUIRED IN ADVANCE The treatment of the child began as part of a project directed by Margaret Mahler and Manuel Furer at the Master's Children Center in New York. The child had no language and was extremely wild and disorganized but it was always clear that she was very gifted and intelligent. The treatment focused on mother and child together to help not only the child but also the mother's ability to tolerate the severity of her daughter's illness. She left home as a teenager, married an Indonesian man and gave birth to two children, during which time, therapy continued by correspondence. When she returned to New York with her children, regular treatment resumed on a three times a week basis. Dr. Bergmann's presentation will discuss the treatment and illustrate some aspects of the therapeutic process with recorded vignettes from sessions. Dr. Bergmann continues to see the patient and will fully describe how the patient functions presently as an adult, an artist and a mother of two grown children. "The patient is and always has been fully dedicated to her children, who play an important part in her recovery from her autistic past." CLICK HERE FOR FULL PROGRAM DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVES |
