Presenter(s)

Donna Bassin, Ph.D. - Dr. Bassin is a clinical psychologist, psychoanalyst, author and fine art photographer.  Her clinical work with rescue workers at Ground Zero and families following 9/11 led her  to consult with communities of veterans regarding their understanding of mourning the traumatic losses of war.  As a participant-observer and documentarian to these communities she has come to understand the importance of the communalization of trauma as well as the value of reparative and memorializing activities.

Presentation Description:

Leave No Soldier takes a dramatic look at the dynamics of activism by two generations of US war veterans. It tells the story of impassioned journeys by communities of American war veterans who carried a military oath from the battlefield to the home front. The two groups are divided by their politics, but united in their devotion to dead comrades and their commitment to 'leave no fallen soldier behind.' Each group sets out to redirect their grief and rage into advocacy for soldiers at war overseas and for wounded warriors at home. In 2006, the third year of the Iraq war, Rolling Thunder, Inc. and Veterans for Peace each undertook a journey of remembrance, protest and reparation.

The film bears witness to the discovery of deep traumas in two nurses from Vietnam, depicts Vietnam veterans embracing the struggle towards healing and reintegration of Iraq veterans and their ongoing social and personal efforts to remember fallen soldiers and fight for social justice. Several veterans will join in the discussion and talk about their journey home.
